Why do I feel lonely?

I’ve tried everything for this. I text more, I say yes to things, I even joined a group that meets Thursdays. I’m around people constantly and I still feel like I’m standing behind glass.
Guide
You’ve done the work most people only talk about doing. And it didn’t move the thing.
Seeker
Not an inch. Thursday nights I drive home and it’s worse, honestly. Like I proved to myself it doesn’t help.
Guide
Say more about the drive home. What’s the feeling right then?
Seeker
That nobody there would notice if I stopped coming. Not in a dramatic way. They like me fine. It’s just, I could swap myself out for anyone and the night would go the same.
Guide
That you’re interchangeable. Present but not required.
Seeker
Yeah. Which is why I figured I just haven’t found my people yet.
Guide
Maybe. Though something in how you said “they like me fine” caught me. That’s a strange thing to sound tired about.
Seeker
What do you mean?
Guide
If they like you, and you feel unmet anyway, I wonder if it’s a version of you they like. One that’s easy to like.
Seeker
That feels like you’re saying it’s my fault.
Guide
No. I’m saying you might be very good at being pleasant, and pleasant doesn’t get you found.
Seeker
…Okay. That’s not nothing. I do manage it. Every conversation, I’m reading what will go over well and giving them that. I don’t even decide to. It’s automatic.
Guide
I know that automatic exactly. Here’s a question. In that Thursday group, has anyone there heard something true about you? Something you didn’t clean up first.
Seeker
No. God, no. There’s this one guy who’s always kind of a mess out loud, says the wrong thing, and everyone actually leans toward him. I remember thinking he’s braver than me and I don’t even know why I thought that.
Guide
You knew why.
Seeker
Because he’s in the room and I’m not. I’m running the version of me that can’t be disliked, and then I’m lonely because that guy isn’t a real person.
Guide
I don’t have anything to add to that. You just put it better than I could have.
Seeker
I always thought loneliness meant I didn’t have enough people. It never occurred to me that they’ve never met me. How would they miss me?
Guide
Right. The math you were doing was more people, closer people. But the missing piece was never other people.
Seeker
It was the part I keep back so nobody can turn on me.
Guide
Which makes sense as protection. It just also means the protection is the loneliness.
Seeker

You don’t have to answer that.
Seeker
I’m just, I’m sitting with the fact that I’ve been safe and alone this whole time and I picked that. Not on purpose. But I picked it.
Guide
Stay there a second. You don’t have to do anything with it.
Seeker
Yeah. I can’t do much with it now anyways.
