"The breath you keep catching is not a malfunction. It is doing a job you never asked it to do out loud."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
I don’t even know why I’m typing this. I keep catching myself holding my breath. Sitting at my desk, driving, whatever. It’s stupid. I’d rather not spend twenty minutes on breathing.
Guide
Then let’s not make it a breathing thing. When you notice the catch, what’s usually going on around it?
Seeker
Nothing dramatic. I’m working. Trying to keep everything from sliding. That’s most of my life right now, honestly. Holding a bunch of stuff up that used to hold itself up.
Guide
Used to. So something changed.
Seeker
The whole thing I built is coming apart. Slow motion. And the more I push, the more it keeps going anyway. So I push harder. That’s the part that’s exhausting.
Guide
And somewhere in that pushing, you stop breathing all the way out.
Seeker
I guess. I don’t think about it. I catch it after. Like I’ve been half holding it for an hour.
Guide
Try something for me. Not now, later. Actually let one out, all the way, empty. What do you imagine happens?
Seeker
Nothing happens. It’s breath.
Guide
Humor me anyway. Picture it.
Seeker
…Okay that’s weird. When I imagine really letting it go, I get this drop in my stomach. Like if I fully exhale I’ll just, stop holding. And then everything I’m holding falls.
Guide
That’s a lot to ask of one breath.
Seeker
But that’s what it feels like. Like the breath is the last thing keeping the whole structure standing. Which is insane, it’s oxygen.
Guide
I don’t think it’s about oxygen. I think you’ve put a job on your breathing that has nothing to do with breathing. You’ve made it the thing that keeps you in line.
Seeker
Maybe. But in line with what?
Guide
With the life you built. You said it yourself, you’re holding stuff up. What if part of what you’re holding is you?
Seeker
What does that even mean?
Guide
If you let the breath all the way out, what would you do that you’re not doing now?
Seeker
I don’t know. Nothing. Something. I don’t want to answer that.
Guide
You went somewhere just then.
Seeker
I felt it. There’s a version of me that would just, act. Say the thing, quit the thing, walk out of the room. And I clamp down on it so fast I don’t even see it fully. The breath is me clamping.
Guide
You’re not holding your breath. You’re holding him.
Seeker
Yeah. And if I stop, I don’t know what he does. That’s the scary part. Not the falling apart. Him.
Guide
That’s a real thing to be scared of.
Seeker
I thought this was about stress. It’s not about stress.
Guide
No.
Seeker
I’m not going to breathe out right now. I don’t think I’m ready for whatever’s on the other side of that.
Guide
You don’t have to. You just found out there’s an other side. That’s plenty.
If you let the breath all the way out, what would the part of you it's been restraining actually do?
