"The habit you keep breaking might be one you agreed to under pressure."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
Third time this year I’ve quit running. I do like it for two weeks, feel great, then just stop. No reason. I clearly just don’t have discipline. Can you help me build an actual system that sticks?
Guide
I can hear how done you are with yourself over it. Before we build anything, can I ask something weird? When you’re on day nine, ten, still going, is it good in there? Or is it more like a check getting ticked.
Seeker
What does it matter if it’s a check. Getting it done is the point.
Guide
Maybe. I’m just noticing you said “feel great” and then quit for no reason. Those two don’t usually sit next to each other.
Seeker
I mean the great part is real. Bit of a runner’s high, whatever. But even then there’s this low grind of, ugh, do I have to? Every single morning it’s a fight to get out the door. Then one day I just lose the fight.
Guide
Who are you fighting?
Seeker
Myself. Obviously. The lazy part.
Guide
Say the fight out loud for me. The morning voice. What does the part that wants you out the door actually say?
Seeker
It says get up, you said you’d do this, you’re going to be that person again who starts things and drops them. Don’t be pathetic.
Guide
And what does the other part say back?
Seeker
Nothing. It doesn’t argue. It just, doesn’t move. Stays in bed.
Guide
That’s a strange kind of nothing. It doesn’t say a word and it wins every time.
Seeker
Okay when you put it like that it’s kind of annoying. It’s not even lazy really. It’s like it’s stubborn. It just goes dead quiet and refuses.
Guide
Refuses what, though? Not running is easy. What’s it refusing?
Seeker
I don’t. Hm… The being told, maybe? Another expectation. The whole, you’ll be a better person, you should want this. I hate that voice. It’s my dad’s honestly, that clipped disappointed thing.
Guide
So there’s a voice that recruits you, and a part of you that won’t let it, and the only way it can say no is to blow up the habit.
Seeker
That’s, yeah. But that’s insane. It’s running. Running is good for me. Why would I need to refuse something that’s good for me?
Guide
I don’t think it’s refusing the running. I think it might be refusing the terms.
Seeker
The terms.
Guide
That you have to earn being okay. That there’s a scorecard.
Seeker
God. I don’t even know if I like running. I never asked. I just knew I was supposed to be someone who did it.
Guide
What was it like to say that?
Seeker
Bad. Kind of loose and awful. Because if the discipline isn’t the problem then I don’t have a problem I can fix, I have a, I don’t even know. I don’t know what I’d do if nobody was grading it. That’s the part that scares me. I might not do anything. Or I might do something totally different and I have no idea what.
Guide
You don’t have to know that right now.
Seeker
No but it’s sitting there now. I can’t unhear it. I quit because part of me was never asked. That’s worse than being lazy somehow.
Guide
Worse how?
Seeker
Because lazy I could beat. This I don’t even know where to stand.
If no one were keeping score, which of your "good" habits would you actually keep, and which have you only ever done to answer someone?
What actually shifted
For some, the trouble may not be weak discipline at all. A habit adopted to satisfy an inner judge, rather than a real wanting, can feel like an imposition, and quitting may be the only available way to say no. Seen this way, the question may shift toward what a one would actually choose ungraded.
