"Envy toward someone you actually like is a strange kind of signal because it looks like a paradox at first."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
SeekerThis is embarrassing. My friend Dana got into this residency she applied for, and I said congrats, I meant it, and then all afternoon I had this sour thing sitting in my chest. Envy. Toward someone I love. What is wrong with me??
GuideNothing jumps out that I can mirror back to you. But I notice you went straight to “what’s wrong with me.” Fast.
SeekerBecause it’s petty. She earned it, I’m happy for her, and some small ugly part of me is keeping score anyway. That’s just being a bad friend with extra steps.
GuideMaybe. Though petty people usually envy people they can dismiss. You can’t dismiss Dana. You like her.
SeekerRight, that’s what makes it worse. If I thought she didn’t deserve it I could at least feel superior about it. This is just me being small next to someone good.
GuideCan I ask what the sour thing was actually about? Not the label. When it landed in your chest, what was the feeling underneath.
SeekerI don’t know. That she just… went for it. She saw the thing and she applied and now she’s got it.
SeekerI would’ve talked myself out of it. I’d have found six reasons it wasn’t realistic before I finished reading the listing. I do that. I call it being sensible.
GuideIs it? Being sensible?
SeekerI mean it sounds better than the truth. Which is I don’t let myself want things that loud. Wanting big out in the open feels, I don’t know, greedy. Like who do you think you are.
GuideWhose voice is that? “Who do you think you are.”
SeekerUgh. My mother’s, obviously. I think I “learnt” this from her in a way. You didn’t ask for seconds in that house. You didn’t act like you were owed anything. Wanting was a little shameful.
GuideSo here’s my guess, and tell me if it’s wrong. The envy isn’t at Dana. It’s at the permission. She’s allowed to want out loud and you never gave yourself that.
SeekerThat’s, hang on. That’s not the same. I’m not jealous of some permission, I’m jealous she got the thing.
GuideFair. I might be overreaching.
SeekerNo. No, don’t back off, that’s me doing the thing again. It’s just, if I say you’re right then it’s not about Dana at all, it’s about me sitting on wanting for like thirty years and calling it good manners.
GuideThat’s a lot to call it good manners.
SeekerIt is. God. I only envy people who reach. That’s the pattern, isn’t it. I don’t envy people who have stuff. I envy the ones who go get it. In fact I envy people who have stuff in general because my thinking is that the only way they could have got it is through their aggressive wanting.
GuideYou noticed that, not me.
SeekerBecause they’re doing the thing I won’t let myself do. And I dressed it up as being humble this whole time.
GuideYou don’t have to file that anywhere right now.
SeekerI don’t even know what I’d want if I let myself. That’s the part that scares me. Like I’ve kept the lid on so long I’m not sure there’s anything under there, or if there’s too much.
GuideYou don’t have to answer that today. But visibly you are thinking about the “next thing”.
SeekerHm. I keep waiting for the sour feeling to be about Dana so I can be done with it. It’s a trap.
If you let yourself want something out loud, without pre-shrinking it, what would you be afraid people would think of you?
What actually shiftedEnvy toward someone you like may be hard to dismiss precisely because you can't fault the person. The feeling often points to the wanting, not the person. For some, it marks a capacity that got exiled early: the permission to want openly and go after things. What looks like pettiness or humility may be quiet longing that never got to speak.
Keeping the direction yoursIf you read back the conversation: notice where the guide quietly became the one who knows — naming things, settling them. That feels normal because it happens so often. It's also where your own sense of direction can go quiet. SelfChatter adds a second voice that just makes those moments visible, so the direction stays yours.
