Why do I dream about a menacing stranger who feels familiar?

There’s a man. Same dream, maybe the fourth time now. He’s standing in a doorway or at the end of a hall, and he’s not doing anything, but I know he means me harm. And the thing that gets me is he feels familiar. Like I should know his name and I don’t.
Guide
Familiar how? Familiar like someone you’ve met, or familiar some other way?
Seeker
That’s what I can’t figure out. If it were just some guy I’d shrug it off. But I wake up sure I know him. I’ve been going through faces. Old bosses, a guy from college who scared me. Nothing fits.
Guide
So you’ve been trying to match him to a real person.
Seeker
Isn’t that the point? Figure out who he is, figure out what it means?
Guide
It might be. But you’ve run through the faces and none of them stuck. Makes me wonder if the familiar part isn’t about a who.
Seeker
What else would it be about?
Guide
I don’t know yet. Can you tell me what he’s actually doing? You said he’s not doing anything.
Seeker
He’s just there. Blocking the way. Very still. He doesn’t come at me, he doesn’t say anything. He just stands like he’s not going to move for me or anyone.
Guide
Say that last part again.
Seeker
Like he’s not going to move. For me or anyone. He just holds the spot.
Guide
What’s it like to say that out loud?
Seeker
Weird. I sort of admire it and it scares me at the same time. I could never stand like that.
Guide
Tell me about that. The couldn’t.
Seeker
I fold. Somebody wants the space, I give it up. I run a front desk, I spend all day being pleasant, smoothing things over. Somebody’s rude and I apologize to them. I go home and I’m furious and I never said a word.
Guide
And here’s a man who won’t move for anyone.
Seeker
Huh.
Guide
What.
Seeker
I was about to say he’s nothing like me. But that’s not why he scares me, is it? He scares me because he does the exact thing I won’t.
Guide
I wouldn’t hand you that as the answer. But something moved when you said it.
Seeker
Yeah. It’s the standing. That’s the whole thing. He just stands there and refuses, and I’ve never once refused anything.
Guide
And the familiar feeling you couldn’t place.
Seeker
Don’t say it.
Guide
You say it.
Seeker
He’s familiar because he’s mine. He’s the part of me that would plant its feet. I dressed it up as a threat because that’s how it looks to me when I imagine actually doing it.
Guide
You went quiet.
Seeker
I keep waiting for him to attack in these dreams. He never does. He just stands there. Maybe he’s not the threat. Maybe he’s waiting to see if I’ll come stand next to him.
Guide
I’ll leave that where you put it.
Seeker
I don’t know what to do with it. But I’m not going to scan for his name.

What actually shifted

A menacing stranger who still feels known often is not a stranger at all. For some, the figure carries a trait the dreamer has pushed out of their self-image, like the capacity to refuse or hold ground. The menace may be how a disowned part looks from a life built on accommodation. The familiarity is the clue that it is theirs.
