Why do I feel ashamed of my needs?

"Sometimes the shame lives less in needing something than in being the one who has to say it."

If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.

Seeker
Ok so short version, I’m hyper-independent. I read a whole thread about it. So I think I know the why, I just want to know how to turn it off lol
Guide
You’ve got a name for it already. I’d rather set the name aside for a minute. When did it last show up? One time, recent.
Seeker
Tuesday. I had a scope done for my stomach stuff and they said someone has to drive you home after the sedation. So I told the nurse my brother was in the parking lot. He wasn’t. I took an Uber and sat in the back half asleep. Very dignified.
Guide
You told her your brother was in the parking lot.
Seeker
Yeah. I mean he lives twenty minutes away. He’d have come.
Guide
Did you get as far as asking him?
Seeker
I typed it. “hey any chance you could grab me tuesday around 11.” Deleted it. Then typed a version with a joke about being drugged up. Deleted that too.
Guide
What happened right before you deleted it? Not why. Just what you noticed.
Seeker
Kind of a hot face thing. And a feeling like. I don’t know. sticky.
Guide
Sticky?
Seeker
like if I sent it, it’d be stuck on me. hard to explain
Guide
It doesn’t have to be explained yet.
Seeker
like it’d be on record. not with him exactly. just on record somewhere that I’m a guy who needs a ride. which is dumb because everyone needs a ride after sedation, that’s literally the rule
Guide
I might be off here, so toss this if it’s wrong. Sometimes when asking feels like that, there was a stretch where asking didn’t go well. You asked and nobody came.
Seeker
no. honestly no. that’s the annoying part. my family’s pretty solid. last year my car died and my brother drove out at midnight, I didn’t even ask, my mom told him. he didn’t make it weird at all
Guide
Okay. So people come. Even unasked.
Seeker
yes when someone else does the asking it’s fine. it’s me saying it. me being the one who types “I need”
Guide
That’s sharper than my guess. It’s not whether they show up. It’s you being the one who says it.
Seeker
which is so stupid. great, so I’m the problem. I’ve got a perfectly good brother and I’m too broken to text him
Guide
That went fast. A minute ago it was one text on a Tuesday. Now it’s broken.
Seeker
ha. yeah. ok
Guide
What you noticed was a hot face, and your thumb deleting the text. Then something got added on about what kind of guy you’d be.
Seeker
a needy one. that’s the word. needy. …ok but it was a ride. a twenty minute ride. I keep doing that, I go from ride to needy like it’s the same thing
Guide
Ride. Needy.
Seeker
I’m trying to think if I’ve ever just asked someone for something for me. no extras. I always add stuff. “if you’re free, no worries, I can totally Uber.” or I offer gas money. or the joke
Guide
What do the add-ons do?
Seeker
make it not count? like if there’s a joke on it, it’s not really asking. they can say no and it’s not a thing. …and I guess what it costs is I end up in an Uber lying to a nurse
Guide
So you’re not sure you’ve ever sent the plain one.
Seeker
I don’t think I have. not once. kind of weird to realize at 34. so what, I just start asking people for stuff all the time now? become that guy?
Guide
That’s a long way from zero. I don’t know what the right amount is. I’m not sure anyone could know before trying any.
Seeker
fair. ok. they want to do another one next month. same deal, someone has to drive. I could text him. no joke, no gas money
Guide
And notice what happens when your thumb is over send. Whatever it is.
Seeker
or I delete it again. I genuinely don’t know which. my face is already doing the hot thing just thinking about it

Think of the last time you needed something small and didn't ask: what exactly would the plain request have said, and what word about yourself got attached to it before you could send it?
