Why do I feel like I’ve done something wrong even when I haven’t?

"Guilt without a cause may be less about wrongdoing than about what it feels like to have nothing to fix."

If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.

Seeker
Probably just anxiety, honestly. I read somewhere it’s called hypervigilance. So, mystery solved? Ha.
Guide
Maybe. A label like that can also keep the thing at arm’s length. When did it last happen?
Seeker
Tuesday. Is that too boring an example? My partner came home, put his keys down kind of hard, didn’t really say hi. And I just. Started running the list.
Guide
The list.
Seeker
Yeah, like, did I forget something, was it the thing about his mom on Sunday, did I leave dishes out. It goes fast. I’d cleaned the whole kitchen by seven. Very productive guilt, ten out of ten.
Guide
Keys down, no hi, then the list, then the kitchen. What happened in your body, right before the list?
Seeker
Um. I don’t know. Like a tilt? My stomach sort of. Tilts. That sounds dumb.
Guide
A tilt. It doesn’t have to make sense yet.
Seeker
It’s like the floor’s slightly off and I have to find out why before… I don’t know before what. Anyway, turns out he’d had an awful day with a client. Nothing to do with me. Classic.
Guide
“Before what.” We can leave that open for now. Try this on, and throw it out if it’s wrong. Sometimes guilt shows up where annoyance might be. Could some of it be irritation at him, walking in like that?
Seeker
No. Not really. I wasn’t mad at him. It’s more like… if it’s me, then there’s something to do. I can fix it. If it’s just his day, then I just have to sit there while he’s like that.
Guide
Okay, I’ll drop the annoyance idea. If it’s you, there’s something to do. If it’s not, you sit there while he’s like that.
Seeker
Which is worse. Weirdly. Wow. I’d rather be guilty. Genius.
Guide
Does this happen with everyone? A friend going quiet, say?
Seeker
Huh. No. If Priya doesn’t text back I figure she’s busy. It’s him. And my manager, when her face does a thing in a meeting. Not friends.
Guide
Him and your manager, not Priya. I’m not sure what the difference is.
Seeker
Maybe it’s the ones where if they’re off, the whole day is off? Like I live inside their mood. I don’t live inside Priya’s. I don’t know. That might be too neat.
Guide
It might be. It came out fast, so maybe hold it loosely. What did the list cost you on Tuesday?
Seeker
The whole evening, basically. And he asked why I was being weird. I apologized like three times for stuff he hadn’t even noticed. So great, now it’s my fault that I feel like it’s my fault. Love that.
Guide
That sounds like the list again. One more item on it.
Seeker
Ugh. Yeah. It is.
Guide
Three apologies for things he hadn’t noticed. That’s something that actually happened, and it’s a lot smaller than “my fault” about everything.
Seeker
Okay. Three apologies is a thing I did. I can look at that. Wait. Keys down, no hi. That’s what happened. “I did something” is the part I added. Instantly. I don’t even see myself add it.
Guide
Keys down, no hi. And then the added part.
Seeker
I don’t know what I’d do instead though. If I don’t run the list I just stand there tilting.
Guide
I don’t know either. What’s the smallest version of standing there?
Seeker
Maybe next time I notice the tilt and don’t clean anything for like ten minutes. See what happens. He might just say what’s wrong. Or not. I honestly don’t know which would be worse.

The last time the guilt showed up, what actually happened, and what explanation got added on top of it in the first few seconds?
