Why am I drawn to people who don’t care what anyone thinks?

"The person who doesn't care what anyone thinks may not be free of something you fear, but holding something you handed away."

If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.

Seeker
There’s this woman at work, Priya. She just says the thing. In a meeting last week she told the VP his plan didn’t make sense, flat, no cushioning, and then moved on. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I always end up half in love with people like that.
Guide
What was it like to watch, in the moment?
Seeker
Honestly a little thrilling. Like watching someone touch a wire that would electrocute me. I keep doing this, though. I collect these people. The friend who quit loudly, the guy who wears whatever. It’s a type for me.
Guide
You said it like a diagnosis. “It’s a type for me.”
Seeker
Well it is. Some people are just built without the anxiety gene. I overthink everything, they don’t, so of course I’m drawn to the opposite. Opposites, you know.
Guide
Maybe. Though the way you said “half in love” didn’t sound like admiring an opposite. It sounded closer than that.
Seeker
What do you mean closer?
Guide
I don’t know yet. Just, when I admire something that’s genuinely not in me, I don’t ache about it. I’m not envious of someone who can do a backflip. Something in how much this pulls at you.
Seeker
It’s not envy. I don’t want to be rude to VPs.
Guide
I didn’t say rude.
Seeker
You kind of did.
Guide
Fair, let me not put that word in. What Priya has, the part you replay, if you strip out the specific thing she said, what’s the actual thing you keep watching?
Seeker
That she didn’t do the math first. She didn’t run it through the “how will this land, will they be annoyed, should I soften it” thing. She just, the thought came out. There was no checkpoint.
Guide
And you have a checkpoint.
Seeker
I have like nine checkpoints.
Guide
So the thing you’re half in love with isn’t her being blunt. It’s the absence of the customs line.
Seeker
I mean. Yeah. That she gets to skip it.
Guide
Gets to. That’s a strange word for a personality trait.
Seeker
Don’t do the word thing again.
Guide
I’ll stop. But you didn’t say “she doesn’t have the checkpoint.” You said “she gets to skip it.” Like there’s a rule, and she’s exempt, and you’re not.
Seeker
Okay. That’s, hang on.
Guide
Take your time.
Seeker
It’s like everyone else got the message that they can just do that and I got a different one. That I don’t get to. That mine only works if everyone stays comfortable.
Guide
Whose comfort, the first time you learned that?
Seeker
My mother’s, obviously. God. This is such a cliche.
Guide
Cliches are just things that are true for a lot of people.
Seeker
I don’t want to make this a whole childhood thing. The point is Priya’s great and I’m not and I should learn to be more direct, I know that already.
Guide
That’s the analysis version. It puts it back outside you as a skill you lack. But a second ago you weren’t lacking a skill. You were saying you’re not allowed.
Seeker
Yeah. And if I picture actually doing it, saying the thing without the customs line, I feel a little sick. Like something bad happens.
Guide
What bad thing?
Seeker
I don’t know. People stop, I don’t know. Like the room turns. I keep the room okay. That’s the whole, that’s what I do.
Guide
So it’s not that you can’t be like Priya. It’s that the person you’d have to stop being is the one who keeps the room okay.
Seeker
And I don’t know who I am if I’m not doing that.
Guide
You don’t have to answer that today.
Seeker
I’m not going to. I keep falling for these people and I think I thought I was admiring them. I wasn’t.

If you stopped running your words through the checkpoint, who is the person you're afraid you'd stop being?

What actually shifted

Being drawn to people who don't care what anyone thinks may be less about their freedom and more about a freedom set aside long ago. For some, the pull is envy in disguise, an ache for the permission to act without first checking the room. Naming it often surfaces fear, not relief, because approval-seeking can feel like who they are.

Keeping the direction yours

If you read back the conversation: notice where the guide quietly became the one who knows — naming things, settling them. That feels normal because it happens so often. It's also where your own sense of direction can go quiet. SelfChatter adds a second voice that just makes those moments visible, so the direction stays yours.
