Why do I feel disgusted by my own aggressive impulses?

"The disgust arrives fast. Faster than the impulse it's reacting to. Notice that you clean the anger up before you ever find out what it wanted."

If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.

Seeker
When I get angry, like really angry, there’s this wave of disgust right after. At myself. The aggression feels ugly. So I shut it down fast. I know it’s probably about my father, his temper, me deciding never to be that. I’ve traced it.
Guide
You’ve traced it well. Clean line, father to you. And the disgust still shows up on schedule.
Seeker
Every time. The insight didn’t touch it.
Guide
Right. So can I ask something dumb? The disgust comes right after the anger?
Seeker
Yeah. Almost on top of it.
Guide
How much of the anger do you actually get to feel before the disgust lands on it?
Seeker
Not much. A flash. Then it’s gross and I’m cleaning it up.
Guide
So you barely meet the thing before you’re disgusted by it. That’s fast. I’m curious what’s there in that flash, before the cleanup. Not the analysis. The flash itself.
Seeker
Heat. In my chest and arms. Hard for me to describe I realize. But maybe then like a wave. Like I could push something over.
Guide
Push something over. Stay there a second. What does the heat want?
Seeker
To take up room. To not be careful. It wants to stop managing everyone’s comfort.
Guide
That doesn’t sound ugly. That sounds like someone standing up.
Seeker
That’s the part I don’t trust. The second it feels good I get scared of it.
Guide
Scared of what?
Seeker
That if I stop being disgusted by it, I’ll be him. I’ll just be force. No brakes.
Guide
Maybe. Or the disgust is the brake, and you’ve been treating having brakes as proof you can’t be trusted with the car. I don’t know. You’d know.
Seeker
I don’t like where that goes.
Guide
Where does it go?
Seeker
That I could just… use it. Push back. Take the room. And I keep not doing that. I keep working on it instead.
Guide
Working on it instead.
Seeker
Yeah. I admit the disgust is easier than the heat. The heat would actually make me do something.
Guide
Just stay here a second with it being true. Don’t fix that.

What would you have to actually do if you let the heat finish before the disgust arrived?

If you read back the conversation: notice where the guide quietly became the one who knows — naming things, settling them. That feels normal because it happens so often. It's also where your own sense of direction can go quiet. SelfChatter adds a second voice that just makes those moments visible, so the direction stays yours.
