"Sometimes the thing that scares us is not the fall but the distance rising would put between us and everyone we've stayed level with."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
Failure I can handle. I’ve handled it plenty. But every time something good is close, I find a way to mess it up or wait too long. I read that fear of success is an actual thing, so I guess that’s me.
Guide
Maybe. That’s a big label to stand under, though. Can we find one time it happened, recently, close up?
Seeker
Two weeks ago. My manager basically told me the team lead spot is mine if I want it. I said I’d think about it. I still haven’t answered.
Guide
What happened in you when she said it?
Seeker
Relief for like a second. Then this drop in my stomach. I started thinking of reasons it’s a bad time.
Guide
So the reasons came after the drop.
Seeker
Yes. The drop was first. The reasons were me catching up.
Guide
What were the reasons?
Seeker
More pressure. Longer hours. What if I can’t actually do it and everyone sees. That one mostly.
Guide
Try this on and throw it out if it’s wrong. Sounds like the fear is failing at the job in front of people.
Seeker
That’s what I’d say, but. It’s not quite that. If it were just me failing I could live with it. It’s more that I’d be over them now. The people I sit with. We’re all level.
Guide
Level. You said level. What kind of level?
Seeker
Like, we complain about the same stuff. We’re in it together. If I take it, I’m the one they complain about. I’d be outside.
Guide
So the drop in your stomach when she offered it?
Seeker
It’s them. Picturing them looking at me different. God, that sounds pathetic when I say it out loud.
Guide
I’m not going to call it anything. I’d rather stay with what you noticed. What does staying level do for you?
Seeker
Keeps things easy. Nobody’s mad at me. I’m liked.
Guide
And what does it cost?
Seeker
I’ve been doing the work anyway. For free, kind of. So it costs the money, the title. And I’m tired of it, actually. I’m tired.
Guide
You just got quiet.
Seeker
Because the honest thing is I don’t just fear the job. I want it. I’ve wanted it for a while and I keep making myself not.
Guide
So maybe not fear of doing well. More like what doing well would put between you and them.
Seeker
Half. I think it’s half that. There’s still the part where they’d resent me and I’d have to just sit in that and be fine. I don’t know how to be fine while someone’s mad at me. I kind of never went there.
Guide
You could just decide their feelings aren’t yours to carry.
Seeker
That’s easy to say. In the room I’d still carry it. I know I would.
Guide
Fair. So not a rule to flip on. What’s the smallest true thing here?
Seeker
That I keep myself level on purpose and I’m calling it caution. And I haven’t actually asked myself if I could stand being the one people are a little cold to.
Guide
You don’t have to answer that today.
Seeker
But I could watch for it. Next time someone at work is short with me, I will try to notice what I do to fix it. I do something. I don’t even know what yet.
Think of one time a good outcome came close and you slowed it down: what happened in your body first, before the reasons showed up to explain it?
What actually shifted
Success may frighten more than failure when rising would separate a person from the people they've kept themselves level with. For some, staying just below is a quiet way to keep belonging. The dread may not be about the work but about being resented, and having to stand in that alone.
