"When everyone suddenly grates on you, the volume may not have gone up on them; something you keep swallowing may finally be too full to stay down."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
I swear I’m going to lose it. My sister called again today. Forty minutes about her landlord, and I just sat there gripping the phone thinking will you please stop. And it’s not just her. Everyone’s like this now. The guy at work who chews with his mouth open. My partner asking what’s for dinner. I want to bite people’s heads off over nothing.
Guide
Over nothing, you said. But it doesn’t feel like nothing while it’s happening.
Seeker
No. It feels like everyone’s decided to be as annoying as humanly possible at the exact same time. Which, fine, maybe that’s not statistically likely. But it’s how it feels.
Guide
Was there a version of you, say a year ago, who’d have sat through your sister’s forty minutes without the urge to bite?
Seeker
Yes. That’s the thing. I’ve always been the one people call. I’m good at it. I listen, I don’t make it about me. So this is new and I kind of hate it.
Guide
You hate that it’s happening, or you hate that you’re the one it’s happening in?
Seeker
Both maybe? I feel like a horrible person. My sister isn’t doing anything wrong. She’s stressed and she needs somebody. And I’m sitting there wanting her to just shut up. Why did I become the kind of person who thinks that?
Guide
I’d slow down there. You went from she’s annoying to I’m horrible pretty fast. Like there’s no floor to stand on between them.
Seeker
Well what else is it? Either she’s the problem or I am.
Guide
Maybe neither of those is quite the shape of it. Can I ask something dumb. When did you last say no to her? To anyone, really.
Seeker
Ok, I get it. But I don’t, I mean, why would I? She needs to vent, I have the time.
Guide
Do you have the time?
Seeker
…I don’t know. I say I do. I make it. I’m the reliable one, I told you.
Guide
You said that like it was a fact about you. Reliable one. I’m asking whether it costs you anything to be that, and where the cost goes.
Seeker
I mean. It goes somewhere. I don’t sit around resenting people, if that’s what you’re getting at, I’m not like that.
Guide
I didn’t say resenting. But you did just spend a while telling me you want to bite everyone’s head off.
Seeker
That’s different. That’s just, that’s irritation, that’s not.
Guide
Not what?
Seeker
Not. Hm.
Guide
Take your time.
Seeker
It’s weird. When you asked when I last said no I got this like hot feeling. Because I couldn’t think of a single time. Not one. And that’s not because nobody asks. People ask all day.
Guide
So the no exists. It just never gets to be a no.
Seeker
It comes out as this. As me hating the sound of somebody chewing. God. That’s, okay, that’s kind of horrible to see actually.
Guide
You didn’t flinch off it, though. You looked right at it.
Seeker
I don’t want it to be that. I’d rather everyone actually be annoying. If it’s mine then I have to, I don’t even know what I have to do.
Guide
You don’t have to do anything with it right at this moment.
Seeker
But it’s been there a long time, hasn’t it? Longer than this month. Honestly, it’s way longer than a year… It’s not new. The chewing guy is new, the feeling isn’t.
Guide
That’s yours to say, not mine. Does that sound true when you say it out loud?
Seeker
Yes. Which I hate. Where does forty minutes of my sister go if I actually let myself feel it. If I’ve never once said stop, and I’m not, I don’t even know how I’d start, then what have I been doing with all of it. Where does all that go?
If the irritation is your own unspoken no arriving too late and pointed everywhere, what is the no actually about, and who would you be if you let it out clean?
If you read back the conversation: notice where the guide quietly became the one who knows — naming things, settling them. That feels normal because it happens so often. It's also where your own sense of direction can go quiet. SelfChatter adds a second voice that just makes those moments visible, so the direction stays yours.
