"Sometimes the feeling arrives without the dream attached, and the rush to name it is the same reflex that kept it out of reach all day."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
This is going to sound like nothing. I keep waking up with a feeling, and I have no idea what it is. No dream I can remember. Just this mood, already going when I open my eyes.
Guide
What’s the mood like, if you had to describe the weather of it?
Seeker
See, that’s the thing, I can’t. It’s not sad exactly. Not scared. It’s just there and it’s heavy and by the time I’ve had coffee it’s gone. I just want to know what it is so I can deal with it.
Guide
Deal with it how, usually?
Seeker
Figure out what’s causing it. Name it. Then I can either fix the thing or tell myself it’s nothing.
Guide
And with this one that hasn’t worked?
Seeker
No. I run through the list. Work, money, my mom’s tests coming back, all of it. None of them clicks. So then I’m just annoyed that I can’t get my head around it.
Guide
I know that annoyance. Can I try something that isn’t naming it? Where is it? In your body, first thing.
Seeker
Chest, I guess. High up. Sort of a pressure. Like I’ve forgotten something.
Guide
Say more about the forgotten something.
Seeker
You know when you leave the house and you’re sure you left the stove on but you can’t picture it? That. But there’s no stove. There’s nothing I’ve actually forgotten.
Guide
So the feeling of having left something undone, without the something.
Seeker
Yes, exactly that.
Guide
Does that feeling live anywhere in your days, or only on waking?
Seeker
…Huh. Kind of all the time, actually. I just don’t call it a feeling during the day. I call it my to-do list.
Guide
Say that again.
Seeker
I mean, all day I’ve got this low thing running that I’ve dropped a ball somewhere. I just assume it’s real and I go find the thing. First thing in the morning there’s no ball yet, so it’s just the feeling with nothing to hang on.
Guide
So the mornings aren’t giving you a mystery feeling. They’re giving you the feeling without the story you usually staple to it.
Seeker
Sort of. And that’s kind of horrible. It means the feeling is underneath the whole day and I only see it when the list isn’t up yet.
Guide
What’s it like to look at it before the list goes up?
Seeker
Quieter than I expected. Sad, almost. Like I’ve been running from something small all day and it only catches me in the morning.
Guide
You don’t have to name that yet. But you noticed it’s sad and it’s small. That’s not nothing.
Seeker
No. I think I’ve been treating it as a problem to solve so I never had to just feel it for a second.
If the feeling that greets you on waking is the same one you spend all day converting into tasks, what would it say if you let it sit there unnamed for one minute?
What actually shifted
Waking with a feeling that has no name may mean the mood arrived intact while the dream did not, and the rush to label it can be the very habit that keeps it out of reach. For some, the same feeling runs quietly under the whole day, disguised as a to-do list. Felt rather than filed, it sometimes turns out smaller and sadder than expected.
