"The car keeps moving and you keep reaching, and the strange part isn't the danger, it's how familiar that reach already feels."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
SeekerI keep having this dream where I’m in the back seat of a car and I’m the one driving it. Reaching through to grab the wheel, stretching my foot for the brake. Does that mean I feel out of control? Just tell me if that’s what it is.
GuideIt might be, but I don’t want to hand you a stock answer and have you nod at it. Tell me the car first. What’s it like in there?
SeekerIt’s my actual car. My old Corolla. And nobody’s up front. That’s the thing, the driver’s seat is empty. So it’s on me.
GuideEmpty. So there’s no one to hand it to.
SeekerRight. I’m leaning way forward, seatbelt cutting into my neck, arm all the way out. And the car’s still going the whole time.
GuideWhere’s it going? Does it feel like it’s about to crash, or just going.
SeekerNot crashing, actually. Just rolling. Down a road I sort of know. That’s why I don’t get why I wake up so wound up. Nothing bad happens.
GuideSo the dread isn’t about wrecking. It’s about the reaching itself.
SeekerHuh. Yeah. It’s the straining. My shoulder aches when I wake up sometimes, I swear.
GuideSay more about the strain. Not what it means. Just the feeling of stretching for a wheel you can’t quite reach.
SeekerIt’s like… I have to keep it steady but I’m in the wrong spot to. Like it’s my job but they gave me the wrong seat for the job.
GuideThey gave you the wrong seat for the job. Does that land anywhere when you’re awake?
SeekerGod. That’s my whole team right now. I got made lead on this project but I don’t actually have any say over the people or the budget. I just get blamed if it drifts.
GuideSo you’re responsible for where it goes and you can’t touch the wheel.
SeekerYeah. Exactly that. I’m doing all this leaning and nobody put me up front.
GuideI notice you asked me to just tell you what it means, right at the start. Reach forward, grab the answer.
SeekerHa. Same move. Okay.
GuideI’m not scoring you on it. I just think it’s interesting the dream’s about a reach and you came in reaching.
SeekerSo what do I do, climb up front? There’s no one up there to make me.
GuideI don’t know if you climb up or you finally say out loud that the seat’s empty and it shouldn’t be yours. That part isn’t in the dream yet.
SeekerNo. In the dream I just keep stretching. I never once think to stop the car and get out.
GuideWhat happens if you sit with that? That it never occurs to you to stop.
Seeker…I don’t like it. It didn’t occur to me at work either.
In the place where you feel responsible for where things are heading, whose hands are actually on the wheel, and when did you last check?
What actually shiftedDreaming of driving from the back seat may point to a gap between responsibility and control: being answerable for where something goes without any real grip on it. For some, the dread isn't crashing but the endless straining. It can help to notice where, awake, the same reach shows up, and whether the seat was ever really yours.
Keeping the direction yoursIf you read back the conversation: notice where the guide quietly became the one who knows — naming things, settling them. That feels normal because it happens so often. It's also where your own sense of direction can go quiet. SelfChatter adds a second voice that just makes those moments visible, so the direction stays yours.
