"When betrayal keeps arriving, the question underneath may be what you saw early and chose not to see."
If this resonates with you, what follows may help you see something about yourself.
Seeker
It keeps happening. People I trust turn around and screw me over. Different people, same ending. At this point I feel like I’ve got a sign on my back.
Guide
That’s a lot of the same ending. Who’s the most recent one?
Seeker
A guy at work. Marcus. We were basically running a project together, I covered for him for months, and then he goes to our manager and makes it sound like I was the one dropping the ball. Classic.
Guide
When you say you covered for him. Was there a point before this where something felt off with him?
Seeker
I mean, he was always a bit slippery. But that’s just how he is, you don’t write someone off for being a bit much.
Guide
You said slippery. What did slippery look like, before the manager thing?
Seeker
Little stuff. He’d agree to take a piece and then it’d quietly land back on me. He’d be vague about what he actually did. I’d ask and he’d kind of talk around it.
Guide
So you asked, and he talked around it, and then?
Seeker
And then I let it go. I figured I was being paranoid. You can’t accuse someone off a feeling.
Guide
I might be reading this wrong, so throw it out if it’s off. It sounds like the manager thing wasn’t really the first sign.
Seeker
No, I knew. That’s the thing I don’t want to say out loud. I knew weeks ago something was wrong with him and I just kept going.
Guide
Knew how? What was the knowing like?
Seeker
Like a little drop in my stomach every time he’d slide out of a straight answer. I’d feel it and then I’d override it. Tell myself I was being dramatic.
Guide
Is that just Marcus, or does the drop show up with the others too? The other times it ended the same way.
Seeker
…Yeah. It’s always there honestly. Early. I always clock it and then I argue myself out of it. God. So this is all me then. I’m the common factor, I’m the idiot who keeps walking into it.
Guide
That’s a fast jump, from “I notice something” to “I’m the idiot.” I don’t think the first one gets you to the second.
Seeker
What’s the difference?
Guide
You tell me. “I keep ignoring the drop” and “it’s all my fault they betrayed me.” Are those the same thing?
Seeker
No. He still did the thing. I didn’t make him do it. But I kept handing him more rope after I already felt it. I keep doing that.
Guide
What does the handing-more-rope do for you, do you think? When you feel the drop and keep going anyway.
Seeker
I don’t know. It’s easier than the other thing. If I say something I might be wrong, and then I’ve made it weird for nothing. So I’d rather get burned later than look paranoid now.
Guide
That’s a real trade. Burned later over awkward now.
Seeker
When you put it like that it sounds insane. But yeah. That’s the deal I keep making.
Guide
You don’t have to solve the whole thing tonight. Is there one piece of it you’d actually watch for?
Seeker
The drop, I guess. Next time I feel it I want to just, not argue with it immediately. Not confront anyone. Just let myself notice I noticed. See what’s actually there.
Guide
That’s a small enough thing to be real.
Seeker
It’s quieter than I thought it’d be. I came in here ready to list everyone who did me dirty and now I’m sitting here thinking about a feeling in my stomach I keep telling to shut up.
Think of the last time someone let you down: was there an earlier moment when something in you quietly registered that something was off, and what did you do with it?
What actually shifted
Repeated betrayal can feel like bad luck, but often there was an earlier signal the person noticed and talked themselves out of. Overriding that quiet read, to avoid seeming paranoid or making things awkward, may be part of how the ending arrives. Noticing the signal is not the same as deserving the harm.
